This is a “Longue d'août” fig, a French bifera variety, which is characterized by the production of very elongated and characteristically shaped blooms, making this cultivar easily recognizable. It is a cold-hardy bifera variety in late summer.

Its color is pink with shades tending toward light brown, and its complex flavor combines sweet with a slightly tart aftertaste. Et voila, here is the Pink Fig of Pisticci! This fig has the shape of a small elongated pear and its weight ranges between 30 and 50 grams, it has a skin with a green color tending to pink, leathery, excellent resistance to handling. In the last decade, chestnut cultivation has marked an interesting recovery in our country. Numerous old fruit chestnut groves have been subjected to rejuvenation pruning, the bark canker infection is experiencing a regression phase while the market prices for the valuable product (chestnuts and hybrid fruits) are now particularly remunerative and attractive for producers. The most suitable form of training for this species is the rather free pot, very close to the natural shape, obtained with a rather high scaffolding (120-150 cm) and then a very low pruning, to avoid the risks of infection that each cut entails. The most suitable planting layouts are those between 5 x 5 m for species and cultivars with a modest development up to 10 x 10 m for large varieties. The harvest, staggered like ripening, is carried out by collecting or lightly beating. Production can range from 10 q.li/ha in chestnut groves in marginal areas to 40-50 q.li/ha in intensive ones. Chestnuts can be used for industrial processing (marrons glaces, chestnut jams, flours and dried fruits) or for fresh consumption. Semi-hard wood is mainly used in the manufacture of furniture and support posts. The black mulberry is rustic, frugal and very adaptable and over time becomes an authoritative presence. However, it has a flaw: its fruits, similar to blackberries, dirty everything they come into contact with; hands, clothes and above all the flooring. But since it is a very beautiful tree, in order not to deprive yourself of it, it is enough not to plant it where this can be a problem. It is an extraordinary shade tree, a shade to be enjoyed at the end of fruiting, as when ripe it shows, on a gnarled and somewhat squat trunk, a very dense foliage. You must also pay attention to where you plant it because the root system, like the foliage, is very extensive. It is then advisable to put it in the sun because it is pleasant to see the play of light that is created on the leaves at the slightest breath of wind. In large gardens it is a tree suitable for flanking an avenue, placing the specimens at least 7-8 meters from each other. However, the black mulberry also does well in small and medium-sized spaces and can even be grown espalier. Here it is better to plant it in a corner, where the foliage can expand and you can appreciate its gnarled trunk.
